Troubleshooting: Trouble
Shifting Gears |
Any of the following are
common symptoms of a manual transmission or clutch problem:
The clutch pedal will not
move down. |
The clutch pedal drops to
the floor when you push on it. Even when the pedal
is depressed, |
the gears cannot be
changed. This problem can occur suddenly, or
changing gears |
can become more difficult
each time you shift. |
The gear shift suddenly will not
move, or it resists, as you push in the clutch
pedal. |

Troubleshooting: Pops Out Of Gear |
| When you press on, or
let off the gas pedal, the gearshift jumps into the
neutral position, leaving the transmission out of
gear. This problem becomes more frequent over time.
| |
| This may mean that
the shift linkage needs to be adjusted, or that
there is an internal problem in the transmission. It
takes an expert to tell. AAMCO center technicians
are the experts in all types of transmissions,
manual or automatic. Take your car, truck or SUV to
your local AAMCO center for the AAMCO External
Diagnostic Service for manual transmission vehicles.
We’ll get to the bottom of the problem and get you
and your vehicle back on the road as quickly as
possible. |

Troubleshooting: Grinding |
In this situation, the clutch pedal and
gearshift work normally. But when you move the gear shift
into gear and release the clutch, a grinding noise is heard
and a vibration can be felt through the gearshift. |
This symptom typically
means one of the following:
There is an internal
problem in the transmission if parts within the
transmission |
are worn or damaged |
The clutch is worn or needs
adjustment |
The shift linkage needs to
be adjusted |
| |

| Because the problem generally
gets worse over time and can cause severe damage to
your transmission, we urge you to take your car,
truck or SUV to your local AAMCO Center for the
AAMCO External Diagnostic Service for manual
transmission vehicles as soon as possible. AAMCO
Center technicians are the experts in all types of

Troubleshooting: Clutch Slipping |
As you shift into gear and engage the clutch,
the engine speeds up, but the car does not. The clutch seems
to be slipping.
Generally this means the clutch
is worn or needs adjustment, but there is the
potential of internal transmission damage. It takes
an expert to tell. AAMCO Center technicians are the
experts in all types of transmissions, manual or
automatic. This problem may worsen with time, making
your vehicle unsafe to drive and should be taken
care of immediately to prevent additional damage to
the clutch assembly. |

Troubleshooting: Noise
When Shifting Gears |
When you shift gears you feel a slight pause,
then hear a clunk. It may sound like it is coming from the
front or rear of the car. This problem will likely gradually
get worse. |
Typical
causes of this problem include: |
There are worn constant velocity
joints(CV joints) or Universal joints (U-joints) |
The differential unit may be worn
and may have too much backlash |
AAMCO Center technicians are the experts in
all components of the drive train: CV joints, U-joints,
differentials, and axles. Take your car, truck or SUV to
