| Red fluid under the car beneath the transmission
Description: After the vehicle has been parked for several hours there may be a puddle of red fluid under it. The transmission fluid level will probably be low. A low fluid level may contribute to a malfunction. But, simply adding fluid to the transmission could disguise—and may not correct-- a transmission problem. A transmission expert must evaluate this problem as soon as possible in order to prevent serious future transmission problems.
Possible reasons:
- The torque converter is leaking
- The transmission’s oil pump seals are bad
- The transmission cooler lines are loose or damaged
- The oil pan is not tightened properly, or the gasket is bad
- The transmission filler tube is loose or damaged
- The transmission case is damaged or is porous
- A transmission gasket or seal is leaking
The first step in determining if this is the reason for your transmission problem is to have a transmission specialist perform an
External Diagnostic Service on your vehicle. This will include a systematic diagnostic evaluation of the performance of your automatic or manual transmission, clutch assembly and transfer case. AAMCO’s expert trained technicians can perform this service which includes checking the level and condition of your transmission fluid, road testing your car, and putting it on a lift to identify how to fix your car and keep your cost to a minimum.
Once an External Diagnostic Service has been performed, and the reasons for the low fluid level are determined, a recommendation will be made on how to remedy the problem.
Your vehicle may require one of two services:
An AAMCO Safeguard Service or a Reseal Service
- The
AAMCO Safeguard Service includes changing the transmission fluid, replacing the filter or cleaning the screen (whichever is applicable), replacing the pan gasket, and making all of the appropriate band and linkage adjustments.
- The AAMCO Reseal Service would likely be recommended if the External Diagnostic Service confirms that an automatic transmission has a malfunction that is related solely to a fluid retention problem. The complete Reseal Service includes replacement of all internal and external gaskets and seals related to the retention of the fluid, as well as replacement of the filter and fluid.
Call your local AAMCO center today to schedule an External Diagnostic Service or call 1-800-GO-AAMCO to locate the center nearest you.
